On the Road with the Kids: A Family's Journey Across Spain and France
As a parent, I've always been drawn to the idea of a road trip, a chance to create memories and explore new places with my family. But with two young children, the challenge of planning an adventure that appeals to everyone can be daunting. So, when the opportunity arose to embark on a three-week road trip from Bilbao in Spain to Saint-Malo in France, I was eager to take on the task. The goal was to blend the spontaneity of a road trip with the comfort and convenience of home swaps and posh camping, all while keeping the kids engaged and happy.
The journey began with a two-night ferry ride from Portsmouth to Bilbao, a chance to relax and watch the world go by. We spent hours gazing at the pods of dolphins, reading books, and even sneaking back to our cabin for a quick nap. The first-class Commodore lounge, though not cheap, offered an excellent buffet, unlimited drinks, and a peaceful haven to recharge before our adventure began.
In Bilbao, we kicked off our escapade with a visit to the iconic Guggenheim Museum, followed by a night of revelry in the city's annual nine-day party, Aste Nagusia. The vibrant atmosphere and the local cuisine, including anchovies, olives, and salt cod, set the tone for our journey ahead.
Our first home swap in Berastegi, a small hamlet in the Spanish Basque Country, allowed us to explore the lush mountains of Gipuzkoa. We savored the steak at Casa Julian in Tolosa, a meal so exquisite that it left us in awe. The savings from home swaps enabled us to indulge in a night at a hotel in San Sebastián, where we enjoyed the city's Michelin-starred restaurants and kid-friendly attractions.
As we drove north, the landscape transformed, giving way to the open flatlands of western France. We stopped in Arcachon, a seaside resort with a 19th-century charm, and stayed in a luxurious chalet at Huttopia, a family-run chain of nature-immersed campsites. The Dune du Pilat, a massive sand dune, offered a thrilling experience, and the nearby Arcachon aquarium, with its axolotls, kept the kids entertained.
Our next stop was the Île de Noirmoutier, where we set up camp in a well-stocked Huttopia tent, surrounded by the ocean and the forest. The stars above and the sound of the waves created a peaceful atmosphere, reminiscent of the eagles we had seen during our previous camping trips.
The final leg of our journey took us to Saint-Malo, a charming Breton port with a wealth of attractions. We stayed in another home exchange, and the kids enjoyed the coastal pool and the local cider. On our last day, we visited Cancale, where we indulged in oysters and mussels, a culinary experience that brought a smile to both my children's faces.
This road trip was more than just a journey; it was a testament to the power of family adventures. By blending home swaps, posh camping, and a touch of spontaneity, we created memories that will last a lifetime.
